THE wife of Newcastle identity Bradley Nichols told yesterday of how the joy over the impending birth of their first child had turned to devastation on her husband's sudden death.
Described as larger than life, Mr Nichols, 33, collapsed from a suspected heart attack watching a rugby union game on Saturday.
Yesterday Belinda Nichols, who is five months pregnant, told how she and Bradley had been married in October last year and had recently bought a house in Belmont North ready for their new arrival.
"He was so excited about becoming a father," Mrs Nichols said. "It's a devastating blow that he won't be around to raise our daughter.
"I can't tell you how greatly he'll be missed and how empty my life feels without him here."
Mr Nichols' parents David and Dianne said their son was a remarkable man who would be remembered for his zest for life and happy disposition that had brought them immeasurable pleasure.
"The bloke never had an unhappy day," Mr Nichols said yesterday. "We were privileged to raise Bradley."
Mrs Nichols was at University No 1 Oval on Saturday when her husband collapsed while watching the first grade game between Wanderers and University.
He had been watching the game from the sideline after playing for Wanderers in the second grade match.
He was revived twice at the scene before being taken by ambulance to the Mater Hospital where he later died.
Part of the Wanderers Rugby Club for more than 17 years, Mr Nichols was described by teammates as a "happy go lucky guy" who was committed to his team and a true family man.
"After the game he'd have a laugh, have a chat and have a beer with you and then go home to the family," Wanderers first grade coach Stephen Lee said.
Mr Nichols' death has shocked colleagues at Forsythes where he has been a partner for the past six years.
"Brad was in a great place in his life. His business was going well, he had a beautiful wife and baby on the way," Forsythes colleague Paul Hankinson said.
"It's a waste . . . so much potential not realised. But the biggest blow is I lost a friend."
Mr Nichols's funeral will be held later this week and a minute's silence will be held during the Wanderers' game at Newcastle's No 2 sports ground on Saturday.
