 Dan Crowley's game plan

Dan Crowley's game plan

25/07/2008 12:44:27 AM

Former Wallabies prop Dan Crowley tells Jamie Pandaram how he would coach Australia to victory tomorrow night. Set pieces "I think the All Blacks will try to crack the Wallabies' scrum early. They will have a real go in the first 20 minutes; if that doesn't work, they'll just try to hold their own. The Wallabies must work together, they cannot lose concentration. If Al Baxter is mentally strong at prop then we'll be able to compete. He was strong last week, but whether he can be mentally strong two weeks in a row, we'll see. If the pack can mentally put their scrum heads on, so to speak, they can break even.

"They concentrated last week. It is about everybody working together; it's no good having six out of eight blokes putting in. It is like a rowing eight - everyone must work as one. If you have one bloke not concentrating, that is 120 kilograms not working for you.

"I think the All Blacks will play around with their lineout this week. I really think there will be some experimentation to get away from the Aussie jumpers. With the new laws they'll be able to do some different things. I also believe they'll avoid kicking the ball out because they won't want lineouts. When they kick, they'll try to keep it in play. When Australia kicks it out, they will take a quick throw to themselves, so the kick-chase is going to be important." Defence "Defensively, Australia won't have an issue. They have shown in the past few weeks they are up to the task. Australia have been very strong in their defence.

"They will wear the Kiwis down with their defence. Other than Dan Carter, their backs haven't been playing that well. He is their only go-to man. They may fling it wide to Sitiveni Sivivatu but I have a feeling they will keep it tight early and use their forwards.

"Australia must keep their line and not drift off people. It's about preparing yourself so you don't ease off, and making sure your mindset is right when you're tired.

"In attack, they just have to be patient. The team has made improvements across the board. If there is one deficiency it's that they have a little bit of impatience early in their game. Last week, they were throwing the ball around willy-nilly. In the first 20 minutes, they threw it all over the place; in the second 20, they settled down. They go out there looking for early points but they need to get a feel for the game before chancing their arm." Breakdown "Whoever wins this battle will likely win the match. I think Australia will gain the edge if Wycliff Palu pulls his weight and doesn't leave all the work up to the others. Australia can win the contest if George Smith is allowed to play to the level he played at last week, which was his best game this year. And also if Rocky Elsom maintains the level he played to last week; he cannot play anywhere below that.

"Palu needs to impose himself around the park and get involved, not let others pick up his share of the work. I still think the back row contest is pretty even without Richie McCaw playing. Daniel Braid is a very good player and he can't be discounted.

"Before they run out, I would say the same thing Robbie Deans is going to be saying: 'You proved last week you can play with the best. If you weren't good enough, you wouldn't be here. Have confidence in yourself and go out there and have a crack'. It will come down to two things: concentration and patience."
